How to Work From Home and Earn Money

Hey there. If you’re anything like me, which I imagine you are if you’re reading this article, you’re tired of the nine to five. Maybe you’ve just started college or maybe you’ve finished it already, and you just want something more than commuting, dealing with coworkers and customers, then getting stuck in traffic, all for a job you don’t even enjoy.

What if I told you it could be different? That you could work from home and actually earn money. How amazing would that be?! Never commute again (unless you want to), never deal with coworkers (unless you want to), and never have to get stuck in traffic again (unless you want to, but I don’t think you do)!

That’s exactly what we’ll be discussing today. I’ll show you some fantastic ways to make a good income, all from the comfort of your own home!

I won’t be sharing anything that can’t legitimately be turned into a job. Things like survey sites and Amazon Mechanical Turk can make money, but they are also unbearably tedious (at least in my opinion) and don’t make much money for the work you do.

So sit back, relax, and join me as I’ll answer the question of how to work from home and earn money.

Types of Work From Home Jobs

There are many types of work from home jobs. These can be actual jobs, with an employer and working for a company. They can be freelance. Or you could start your own business, which is my preferred route. It’s all up to you! Let’s look at each one in a bit more detail.

Actual Jobs

These can be various and tend to be the most restrictive. But if you manage to get one of these, they can also be one of the most “secure” by typical standards.

You will also earn money right off the bat with these jobs, meaning an “actual job” is best if you’re looking to earn some decent money fast. No having to wait!

With Covid, a lot of jobs began work from home options for their employees. I used to work for a solar company and for the first few months I was able to work from home. Eventually, as things got better, they took away that option. So be careful with these jobs, as you’re working for someone else who controls if you really do work from home.

Almost anything with computers can be an online job, so there are quite a few options. You can try looking on Google for openings. Programming jobs are especially hot nowadays, and many of them can be online.

Freelance Jobs

Freelance jobs are more open and flexible, so you are more on the road to becoming your own boss. Depending on what you’re doing, you can make good money with freelance work.

This type of work can be tricky, however, as it may be hard to find consistent clients and projects. If you can manage to get some clients who pay for your work regularly, you should be safe. But things can always change.

Both my parents freelance write for many clients. They make good money, but having to look for new clients can be difficult. Word of mouth is amazing in this type of work though, and if your work is good you should have no problem finding and keeping your clients.

Writing is a big portion of freelance work, but if you want to get an idea of what’s possible, you can look on websites like Fiverr. Many people make full-time incomes from doing different gigs on Fiverr!

Starting a Business

This is my preferred route, as in my opinion, it is the most lucrative as well. But it is also the hardest, as no one will give you money for nothing. You have to put in a lot of work making a good product or service, and then marketing it.

However, once you get past the beginning stages, it truly has no ceiling. You can scale your business endlessly, and make any amount of money you want. The sky really is the limit (unless you’re Elon Musk, in which case the universe is the limit)!

I’ve chosen to start an affiliate marketing business, and I’ve been enjoying the process of getting things going. It is definitely a lot of work and study to start a business, but in the end, the freedom you get from it is unparalleled in any other work.

There are limitless possibilities of what you can do, so get creative! Find what you have to offer people, and find a way to get it to as many as possible! It really boils down to those two steps. Now that we have all of that covered, let’s look at a few different avenues you could take to start earning money while working from home. You can decide which best suits you!

Programming

As I said earlier, this is one of the most popular work from home style jobs in the world today. Programmers are needed for literally everything online. It’s an extremely valuable skill, and you won’t have a problem finding employers wanting to hire you.

Multiple languages exist for you to learn, such as HTML, CSS, Java, JavaScript, Go, C++, C#, SQL, Ruby, Python, and countless others. They all share a few similarities, but each one is its own language and you’ll have to learn the nuances of how to get stuff done in whichever you choose.

Nowadays the majority of games and such run on Javascript, Java, C#, or C++. Whereas websites and things of that nature use HTML and CSS. If you do a quick google search you can really get an idea of what each language is good for and choose yours from there.

There are many places you can go to learn to program. You can take college classes on it if you want to. One of the best (and cheapest) places to learn is Codecademy. They teach all the languages I mentioned and more, and they do it in easy-to-follow lessons. My brother and dad have learned from there and absolutely love it. You can learn more about it here.

Freelance Writing

Both my parents have done this at one point, and my mom still currently does this. If you are a good writer and can get ideas across in a clear, concise way, this may be your path.

There are many things you could potentially write about. My mom writes articles for some blog sites, as well as ghostwriting books for various clients. She enjoys it a lot and makes pretty good money from it.

Finding clients is the hardest part of this job, but if you studied up a bit and learned how to put yourself out there, you can find some fairly quickly.

Once you have clients, it’s all about producing quality content. Don’t plagiarize or be lazy, because they will notice and then it’s hard to keep them. So be thorough! Always be trying to improve your writing and learn more.

Your client may have all of the information and research you need for a specific topic you’ll be writing about. Or they may have only some or none of it. It varies from person to person. Just know that research will be an important part of this job.

There are also many sites you can go to if you’re just starting out, and they can help you find clients. Sites like Contena, Upwork, and Textbroker are some of the most popular ones.

Dropshipping

Dropshipping used to be all the craze a few years back, with everyone claiming it was the easiest way to make money fast, and that nothing else can compare.

While the surrounding hype has died down quite a bit as of late, it is still a great opportunity to build a business. And with very low overhead, you can’t go wrong trying it out.

Just like with starting any other business, it can be quite difficult to start up, as you will be putting in a lot of work in the beginning with little to no results. But in the end, the payoff is far greater.

Dropshipping is taking products from one website, such as Etsy, Alibaba, or any other number of sites, and listing them on selling platforms such as eBay.

You simply markup the price when listing it, and you get to keep the markup when you make a sale. You don’t have to worry about inventory or anything like that.

Be careful with this, however, and make sure to do your research as some sites discourage dropshipping. Again, do your research so you don’t get into trouble.

This can be highly lucrative as well, so if this is what you would like to do, then keep at it and one day it’ll pay off. Good luck!

Youtube and Streaming

Many people think that there’s no way you can become popular or make money from YouTube or from streaming, but there are a surprising amount of individuals who make substantial incomes from these routes.

That being said, it is still incredibly difficult. You will be required to adapt and change, as well as learn and grow, more so than other businesses. But if this is the job that speaks to you, then go for it!

You will have to learn many skills such as video making, video editing, photo editing, presentation, and numerous others, as well as buying the necessary equipment such as a good camera, microphone, lighting equipment, green screens, and other such things.

The overhead can range from low to high with this, and you can always invest more money as you get things going. You’re in control of the direction of your business, which is both scary and exciting!

You will also have to learn to not let others’ opinions get to you, as every person with some level of fame and renown has haters. But you must also take constructive criticism to improve your content and brand. It’s a fine line you’ll have to work with.

The most important thing to remember though is to have fun and just be yourself! At first, it may be difficult, but if you are true to yourself, and you keep learning, growing, and improving, you will reach your dreams. All it takes is hard work, effort, and dedication.

Affiliate Marketing

In my opinion, this is one of the best and easiest businesses to start. There is little to no overhead, so you don’t need much money to start doing it. There’s also no limit to how much money you can make with this method.

There are many different avenues to go with this, as there are endless amounts of affiliate programs you can join. Amazon has one of the largest affiliate programs in the world, with the majority of its products and services giving some sort of commission.

To get an idea of how massive the potential is with affiliate marketing, try googling your favorite business or brand, and then type “affiliate” or “ambassador” after it. I guarantee that 90% of the things you search up have some sort of program.

There are also PPC or “Pay Per Click” programs, as well as product reviews, ambassadorships, and many others. You’ll have no problem finding something to sell to others in your targeted niche.
